Dbacks and Rockies Battle To A Split At Coors

Two teams eyeing up a ticket to the KPSL playoffs and this series had all the tension you paid for. For the Rockies, they are on the track for a spot, just the seeding in the question. For the Dbacks, they need wins, period. While they come in 42-38, they still have the Nationals, Padres and yes, even the Phillies with the outside chance to get hot and overtake Arizona if they slip up. So, what happened in the mountains?

Yes, you read that correctly. The Dbacks put out an all out mugging of the Rockies pitching. It was 9-0 after four, and Arizona continued to pile on with six more in the later part of the game. Brendan Donovan would hit a 3-run home run, Jacob Marsee would have 3-RBI’s, Otto Lopez hit a solo bomb and Isiah Kiner-Falefa would have a 2-Double, 4 RBI day on a day where the snakes would have 17 hits and 24 total men on base. Ryan Pepiot would get the win in this one, pitching five plus and striking out four. Chad Patrick would come in relief where the Rocks would only manage four hits.

This is the point where I begin to think, the Dbacks are not scoring the rest of the series. It’s close. Let’s start with Nick Pivetta, who pitched eight solid innings for the Rockies, allowing 1-run and striking out three. He didn’t need swing and miss stuff and easy contact for outs worked just fine. Jacob Marsee would drive in the only Dbacks run on a single. Caleb Durbin was the hero in game two, hitting a 2-run home run in the fifth off Jesus Luzardo to make it 2-0 at that point of the game. That would be enough as Emilio Pagan would strike out the side in the 9^th for the save and the Rockies win.

Repeat of Game 1 for Arizona. It must be football season, cause Dbacks putting up touchdowns. Clayton Kershaw is on the mound and Dbacks over the years have had his number, mainly in the playoffs. The snakes jump out early and often, putting up seven runs to make it 7-1 after two innings. Additional runs in innings three through eight made it 14-1. Alex Call made the most of his last at bats of the regular season, going 3 for 5 with 4RBI’s, 2-doubles and 1-triple. Andrew Vaugh has a 3-hit, 3-RBI day while Gavin Sheets hit a home run. Daren Lile would hit a Sac Fly RBI for the Rockies. Meanwhile, Zac Gallen once again was defying everything with another solid performance. Gallen went eight innings, striking out six and allowing only one run.

Starting to see a theme to the evening. Odd number games, Dbacks bat around like the gashouse gang on Bugs Bunny, in the even number games, it becomes a pitcher’s duel, and the Rockies win the close one. Robbie Ray keeps the Dbacks bats in check, going seven and striking out ten and walking to the dugout with a 2-0 lead. The Rockies would get a Bret Baty 1-run single in the second to make it 1-0 and then add a second run in the sixth on a Matt Olson 1-run single. Francisco Lindor would hit a solo home run in the ninth to make it 2-1, but there was no magic in this one. Rockies win game four and split the series.

A rare moment to watch the Dbacks our homer the Rockies in Coors 4-1. Rockies are now 47-37 and have control of a playoff spot. The Dbacks are 44-40 and sit in the #6 seed and need some help. Nationals, Padres, and Phillies are still knocking on the door trying to get in. Dbacks are rooting for whoever these teams play to hold them back. Next stop for Arizona, a trip to San Francisco to take on the Giants. The Rockies have a big matchup against the Dodgers to close their year.
