Dbacks Grind Out Series Split Against Reds

Arizona makes their way back for a home series for only the second time this season.  After a 1-7 start, they have gone 10-4 and were looking to add to that total against a scuffling Reds team looking for a break and get out of this early season funk.  Let’s get to the action.

Game 1 Reds 1 Dbacks 0

Uh, I said let’s get to the action and this was a snooze fest for the Snake fans in attendance. Reds would score in the first on a 1-run single by Eugenio Suarez. That was all the scoring needed in this one to secure a game one win for Cincinnati. Edward Cabrera would pitch six strong innings, striking out with 8 strikeouts. Dbacks pitcher Grant Holmes would also log 8 strikeouts in six innings, but the one run in the first inning would be the difference.

Game 2

Dbacks 6 Reds 2

Arizona jumps out to a 1-0 lead in the first with a Jakob Marsee 1-run single.  Luis Arraez would make it 2-0 in the 2nd with a 1-run single of his own. Rafael Devers would cut the lead to 2-1 on a solo blast in the 5th.  But in the bottom of the 5th, the Dbacks would score plenty.  Nine men would come to the plate and score 4 runs on three hits and three walks. Trevor Story would hit a 2-run single and Issac Collins and Jacob Young would slap 1-run singles. Andrew Abbott would have a nice day going six innings and striking out five for the win.

Game 3

Reds 9

Dbacks 1

When Arizona picked up Ranger Suarez and Jesus Luzardo, it was an interesting idea to put three lefties in the starting rotation.  Abbott has performed well and Luzardo has been a mixed bag.  Ranger Suarez struggled in his debut, but has been performing well in the following starts.  Then came this game.  In 5 1/3 innings, he would give up 13 hits and 3 homes en route to the Reds plating 9 runs.  They were lead by a 2-run home run by Ketel Marte, a solo shot by Brenton Doyle and a 2-run blast by Eugenio Suarez. Merrill Kelly would go 8 2/3 of an inning, with only a solo home run from Brendan Donovan in the first as his only blemish.

Game 4

Dbacks 6

Reds 4

Both teams looking to get a major win and take the series.  It would be Jesus Luzardo pitching a gem and he would go six shutout innings and strike out 11 Reds in the process. Brendan Donovan would slap a 2-run Double and Isiah Kiner-Falefa would has a 2-run single to go with his three hit day.  The Reds would do some damage late after Luzardo would head to the back. Gary Sanchez would get a 2-run triple to help ignite a 3-run 7th and Jared Triolo would hit a solo shot in the 8th to make it 6-4.  David Bednar would make his lone appearance (cue up Renegade by Styx) and record the save for the win and the series split.

The Reds left plenty of men on the bases in this series and some key situations ended up with double plays getting Arizona out of some jams.  Outside of Game 3, the Dbacks starting pitching performed extremely well, pitching 18 innings and giving up 3 runs in the process.  Dbacks will now stay at home and wait for the Pirates to fly in to participate in what should be a key series for both teams.
