There is this old nursery rhyme which aptly describes my team — when we are good we are very, very good. When we are bad, we are horrid.
Against the Nationals we were very good and showed what this team can do when everything goes clickity-clack. So far, with minor exception, the starting pitching has been outstanding. We haven't hit that well, but enough, and the bullpen has been good enough, but hardly outstanding.
So Jeff caught us on a good night. And the world didn't blow up, which was a bonus.
GAME 1
Cardinals 11
Nationals 1
WP: Singer
LP: Lodolo
The goings on: In the first half inning of the first game, the Cardinals erupted for four runs on a Freddie Freeman RBI single and a three run Masyn Winn homer. Brady Singer, who got torched by the Brewers in his first start allowing just five hit over 6 2/3 innings. In fact the Nattys didn't score until Pete Crow Armstrong's solo dong in the 7th. Austin Hays added a three run homer in the ninth, as the Cardinals rolled to an easy win. Both Hays and TJ Friedl had four hits in the game. Winn added three more.
GAME 2
Cardinals 3
Nationals 2
WP: Gausman
LP: Pivetta
S: Estevez
The goings on: Pivetta was sharp, but he allowed three runs in the third behind a Freddie Freeman RBI double and a two-run homer by Christian Yelich. The lead held as Gausman didn't allow a hit until PCA's triple in the 7th. Chapman followed Crow Armstrong with a two run homer which cut the lead to one. The Nationals had tow on with one out in the 8th, but Banda struck out Frelick and got PCA on a pop up to end the inning. Estevez got a game ending DP in the ninth to end it. Jeff went about 0-9 on ballpark single chances on the day.
GAME 3
Nationals 2
Cardinals 1
WP: Sanchez
LP: Skenes
S. Dryer
The goings on: It was a pure pitchers dual as it was scoreless for the first four innings. Washington broke through in the fifth with an Abrams triple and a Carson Kelly RBI single. Abrams added an RBI double the next inning. Skenes went seven and is still searching for his first win of the season. The cardinals hit into three double plays and had a caught stealing.
GAME 4
Cardinals 9
Nationals 4
WP: Woodruff
LP: Cease
The goings on: Another tight game was broken up in the fourth as the Cardinals struck for five runs — Yelich and Norby each drove home two. Yelich added a two run homer in the sixth to make it 7-0. Jeff stormed back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the cardinals were able to win going away despite hitting into four more DPs.
