Before going into this series recap, let’s go back to when the Pirates came to the desert and outperformed the Dbacks. Not only would they take three of four, but two games were 1-hit shutouts, back-to-back. Since that series, it appears that Arizona found their bats when playing the Padres. In need of trending upward in the standings, they were hoping to take down the Pirates the second time around.
Game 1
Dbacks 11
Pirates 1
Where to we start. Zac Gallen continues to be shockingly awesome in his starts. This game is no different. Eight innings of work, one run and seven strikeouts. On the offensive side, 20 hits, 24 total men on base and 11 runs. Kyle Higashioka got tired of his name being in trade discussions or possibly cut, decided to go 4 for 5 with 2 RBIs to lead the Dbacks.
WP – Gallen
LP – Cavalli
Game 2
Pirates 3
Dbacks 1
Luis Castillo would keep the Dbacks bats quiet in Game 2. He would allow one run in six innings of work. His only blemish would be a 1-run single by Issac Collins. Mookie Betts would hit a 1-run single for the Pirates, while Pete Alonso would hit a 2-run home run to provide enough offense for the W.
WP – Castillo
LP – Holmes
SV – Hader
HR – Alonso
Game 3
Dbacks 3
Pirates 1
Dbacks would play reverse score in this one with Pittsburgh. Ivan Herrera would hit a 2-run single and Luis Arraez would slap a 1-run double for the Arizona offense. Heriberto Hernandez would drive in the only run for the Pirates on a single. Andrew Abbott would go six innings, striking out six for the win.
WP – Abbott
LP – Schwellenbach
SV – Bednar
Game 4
Dbacks 7
Pirates 1
Ryan Pepiot would get his first start with the Dbacks after a trade with the Nationals. Pepiot was hesitant about coming to Arizona, after he heard that people called him “pee pot”. The Dbacks management cleared things up and on the mound he went. At the end of his day, Pepiot would pitch six shutout innings and strike our five. The Arizona bats would come alive with two runs in the 4th and 5th innings and three more in the 7th. Issac Collins would hit a 2-run single, as would Brendan Donovan. Francisco Lindor, Donovan and IKF would has 1-run singles in the 3-run 7th. Mookie Betts would hit a 1-run single in the 7th for the Pirates, but it would not be enough. The Dbacks take the victory and the series. Luis Arraez would have a 3-hit day for the snakes.
WP – Pepiot
LP – Peralta
The Dbacks are now 29-27, 6-2 in their last eight and have series against the Phillies and Cubs next. A really great opportunity to pick up some wins. We know this league is always full of surprises, and nothing is easy in the KPSL. One series at a time, one game at a time. Let’s Go.
