Diamondbacks vs Padres Recap
The Diamondbacks rolled into San Diego after a disappointing series in DC, getting swept by the Nationals. In the meantime, the Padres are rolling and posting one of the best records in the KPSL at the start of the season.
Before the series began, Andy said that last year I won the overall matchup and that we reverse every year. Could the Dbacks end that trend on this evening?
Game 1
Dbacks 1
Padres 6
WP – LopezLP – Abbott
HR – Machado
The Dbacks Andrew Abbott was in his 15th start and has yet to win a game in the KPSL. He had pitched well in his first 3 games, but he would need to wait until the next game. The Padres would dump 4 runs in the 3rd inning, led by a Paul Goldschmidt 2-run double. Manny Machado would hit a solo shot in the 5th inning. Pablo Lopez went seven strong innings of work, striking out 6 batters, while allowing 1 run in his victory.
Game 2
Dbacks 10
Padres 2
WP – TurnbullLP -FriedHR – Machado, Blackmon
Dbacks’ lack of bats had not put them in a 7-game losing streak. That would change in game two against San Diego. Alex Verdugo would lead the way with a 4-hit, 4-RBI game and Charlie Blackmon would hit a 3-run home run to jump start a 7-run 6th inning in route to a 10-2 blowout victory. Spencer Turnbull was money, leaving the game after pitching six no-hit innings of work, striking out eight Padres. Manny Machado would hit a solo home run in the loss.
Game 3
Dbacks 5
Padres 4
WP – FeltnerLP – SeverinoSV – YatesHR – Peralta
Ryan Feltner got in trouble in the first inning and had bases loaded with two outs. Jesus Sanchez would misplay a ball hit by Matt Vierling, resulting in a 3-run double. The Dbacks would bounce back and put up a 4-run 5th, led by a 3-run bomb by David Peralta. Gabriel Moreno would hit a 1-run single to add some insurance. A Lars Nootbar 1-run double would make it a 5-4 game, but Kirby Yates would strike out three of the four batters he faced to record the save.
Game 4
Dbacks 3
Padres 2
WP – King
LP – Cole
SV – Hudson
Another close game. The Dbacks would score all three of their runs in the first two innings, led by RBI’s from Luis Arraez, Amed Rosario, and Otto Lopez. The Padres would come back with 2 solo home runs by Matt Vierling and James McCann in the 7th. In the end, the Dbacks bullpen would shut down the San Diego bats to secure the Game 4 win and Series. Michael King would get the win, going 6 1/3 and striking out 9.
This was a hard-fought series and could have gone either way. Andy missed quite a few diamond shots, and I had the hot hand in establishing my lead, resulting in 5 of 6 stolen base attempts. Great playing last night Andy and look forward to you taking the trip to Arizona next time around.
