Pirates and Dbacks Split Series In The Desert

A Tuesday night virtual matchup took place between the Pirates and Dbacks in the Arizona desert. A big series for either team would be a huge boost in the divisional standings. So how did things shake out?
Game 1: Pirates 3 Dbacks 2 (15 Innings)
Jazz Chisholm and Willy Adames would hit solo shots for Pittsburgh, while the Dbacks would play some small ball and get RBI’s from David Bote (double) and Alex Call (Sac Fly). Ryan Feltner and Jared Jones would each go six strong innings, but at the end of regulation, we would play extras. In the top of the 15th, Marcel Ozuna would smash a solo home run to seal the victory.

Game 2: Pirates 4 Dbacks 2
Jesse Winker would hit a solo home run to start the game and Gio Urshela would add a home run in the 7th inning to give the Pirates a 4-2 victory. Adames would hit a 2-run single. Spencer Schellenbach and the Pirates pen would only allow 3 hits in this game. Jesus Sanchez would hit an RBI Double in the loss.

Game 3: Dbacks 10 Pirates 4
When Arizona hits, they do it in bunches. David Peralta would hit a solo home run to start the bottom of the 1st inning. The Dbacks offense would have 10 runs on 15 hits, lead by a 4-hit performance by Luis Arraez, would double and triple with 2-RBI’s in the victory. Kyle H Higashioka would hit a 2-run home run in the loss.

Game 4: Dbacks 9 Pirates 8 (12 Innings)
A wild day game. The Pirates were up 8-5 after 6-innings. The scoring was led by a Sam Hilliard 3-run home run. Arizona would strike back, led by an Alex Verdugo 2-run home run in the 8th inning to make it an 8-7 game. An Arraez single in the 9th inning would tie the game and would force another extra inning affair. With two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning, Gabriel Moreno and Eziquiel Tovar would hit back-to-back doubles to walk off the win for Arizona and split series. Jesus Sanchez would hit a 2-run home run in the game and Luis Arraez would have his 2nd straight 4-hit performance.

Final Thoughts: Pirates managed to get a few home runs on a 1-3 diamond shot. Games 3-4, the Dbacks rolled a lot of low numbers and had 34 hits, and 19 runs combined. Luis Arraez went 12 for 19, with 4 doubles, 1 triple, 4 RBI’s and 4 runs scored in the series.
