The Nats and Dodgers locked horns in Chavez Ravine for what was Washington's season-opening series, although LA was already well under way. The teams tangled to a 2-2 series split.
Game 1 - Dodgers, 7-1
W-Manaea L-Sanchez HR-Pages, Suzuki
The Dodgers bunched big hits together for a 5-run 4th inning that would win the day. With two outs, the bottom of the order did the major damage, highlighted by an IKF bases-clearing 3-run double. Andy Pages added an eighth-inning homer and Sean Manaea quieted the Nats for 7 innings. Seiya Suzuki's homer accounted for the lone Washington run.
Game 2 - Nationals, 4-3
W-Cease L-Keller S-Estevez HR-Wood
Washington tallied individual runs in 4 of the first 6 innings -- in fact, they never scored more than 1 run in any inning in the series! -- and Dylan Cease and the bullpen held off a late Dodgers charge from 4-0 down. Jose Ferrer entered for Cease in the 7th and loaded the bases before putting down James Wood and Jackson Merrill to end the threat. Matt Chapman hit two doubles for the Nats and Wood homered for the Dodgers.
Game 3 - Nationals, 2-1
W-Rodon L-Anderson S-Esteves HR-O'Neill (2)
What was expected to be the highest-scoring game of the series of course wasn't. Over 12 combined innings, Carlos Rodon and Tyler Anderson yielded just 5 hits. Luckily for the Nats, the two biggest were solo shots by Tyler O'Neill in the fourth and sixth innings. The bullpen trio of Jake Junis, Ferrer, and Carlos Estevez again closed the door.
Game 4 - Dodgers, 5-2
W-Yamamoto L-Lodolo HR-Pages
Yoshinubu Yamamoto and four relievers scattered 7 singles to give the Dodgers the split. Shohei Ohtani -- not mentioned yet in this writeup! - was moved to second in the order and promptly tripled in the first inning, giving LA the early lead. Pages delivered his second homer of the series in the fifth, and despite a game effort by Nick Lodolo, the Nats didn't have enough on this day.
Overall series score was 16-9 for the Dodgers. Washington is happy for the split and moves on to host San Diego next.
