Arizona makes its first home series of the season after a 12-game road trip that put them at 5-7. They found the pitching after a sweep of the Cubs, but the bats were still cold (or more luke warm). Could they cause some damage against the Giants?
Game 1
Dbacks 10 Giants 7
WP – Luzardo LP – Sale SV – Bednar
HR – Acuna, Andujar, Marsee
Jesus Luzardo for the Dbacks against Chris Sale of the Giants, and it was all Snakes out the gate. They would drop a 5-spot in the first inning led by a 2-run Miguel Andujar home run and 2-run Issac Collins Double. Giants for score 2 in the top of the 2nd only to watch Arizona get three more runs in the bottom of the innings, led by a Jacob Marsee 2-run bomb. Giants would slowly climb back as Ronald Acuna would hit a 2-run home run in the fifth to make it 9-5 Dbacks. Dylan Lee and David Bednar would keep the Giants hitters in check to give the W to the Dbacks.
Game 2 Giants 4 Dbacks 0
WP – Oviedo LP – King
HR – Bauers
This game was a solid pitching matchup in the first five innings between the Giants Johan Oviedo and Dbacks Michael King. Oviedo would strike out 6 in five innings of shutout baseball. Meanwhile, King was cruising as he would strike out his 9th batter in the sixth inning. Then some control issues as he would walk Corey Seager, hit Daulton Varsho and walk Ian Happ to load the bases. Jake Bauers would step up and hit one into the cheap seats for a grand slam home run. Dbacks remained punchless with the bats against a steady stream of relievers en route to a Giants shutout.
Game 3
Dbacks 7 Giants 6 (12 Innings)
WP – Brubaker LP – Banks
HR – Monasterio (2)
Dbacks would jump out to an early 2-0 lead before an Andruw “Moving In” Monasterio would hit a 2-run blast to tie the game. Dbacks would eventually make it 5-2 after RBIs from Miguel Andujar and Otto Lopez. The Dbacks would tack on a run in the 8th and it looks like they were in complete control. Jerimiah Estrada would get the rock in the 9th and he proceded to put the three men he faces on base, with Corey Seager driving in one run to make it 6-3. Then Monasterio came up and launched a 3-run blast to tie the game at six. We head to extras. In the bottom of the 12th, Issac Collins hits a ball to Daulton Varsho and he misplays it, score it an E8 and Collins on 2nd base. Jacob Marsee would slap a single to score Collins and it’s a walk off win for the Dbacks.
Game 4 Dbacks 6 Giants 4
WP – Doval LP – Keller SV – Bednar
HR – Acuna, Lopez (2), Story
We head to the final game of the series and it’s the Giants that jump all over Andrew Abbott, as Ronald Acuna would smack a 3-run home run to give the Giants the lead. They would tack on a run in the third on a Patrick Bailey RBI single. Otto Lopez would get the Dbacks on the board with a 2-run home run to make it 4-2 Giants. In the sixth inning, it was Otto Lopez again, with is 2nd 2-run bomb to tie the game. In the eighth inning, with Miguel Andujar on fist base, the Dbacks bring up Trevor Story to pinch hit and he connects with a 2-run bomb to give Arizona the 6-4 lead. David Bednar would provide a shut down ninth to record the save and give the Dbacks the series win.
This was an entertaining series and plenty of back and forth drama. It was nice to finally see the Dbacks bats wake up and post 46 hits and 59 total men on base. Thanks for playing Billy. On to the next series.
