After a soul-sucking split at the hands of the brewers, the Cardinals reluctantly resumed their season against the Diamondbacks last night at Ed's house.
The team was able to win three of four, but had the tussle been staged in a diamond friendly park, the Redbirds might not have won any.
The Cardinals starters allowed runs in just one inning throughout the series. The bats were namby-pamby at best and the bullpen was leaky.
Game 1
Diamondbacks 6
Cardinals 5
WP: Holmes
LP: Gausman
S: Bednar
The goings on: In the top of the second inning, Arizona exploded for five runs, capped by Ivan Herrera's three run homer. It was enough to styme a Cardinals "attack" that left 11 runners on base during the proceedings. Five times, they had runners in scoring position with less than two outs and could not deliver in a dog pound.
Game 2
Cardinals 5
Diamondbacks 4
WP: Estevez
LP: Beeks
The goings on: This one blew like a caffeinated hooker. Yes, Paul Skenes pitched great ball for seven innings. But through two starts he is still winless because Estevez gave up a diamond slam to Gorman to tie the game in the ninth. In the bottom of the frame, Friedl doubled and scored on Bader's single to deliver the victory.
Game 3
Cardinals 6
Diamondbacks 0
WP: Woodruff
LP: R. Suarez
The goings on: The game was scoreless through five because my team can't hit. We pushed across some runs in the sixth with a Freedie Freeman single and a grand slam by William Contreras. We added another run in the eighth and thankfully it was enough to hold, because Jim's team couldn't hit either. He had three or four paper diamonds (thank you Busch stadium).
Game 4
Cardinals 2
Diamondbacks 1
WP: Nelson
LP: Luzardo
S: Iglecias
The Goings On: This one was scoreless through five also because guess the fuck why. Right. William Contreras was the single bastion of offensive life once again with a two-run double which represented our entire offensive effort (or lack thereof). We did get two stolen bases from Nolan Arenado who hit the three for his lead both times. Ryne Nelson pitched well for his second win in as many starts. The bullpen held the lead, and I was able to prance home with the series win.
Let's not kid ourselves here. The Cardinals are to offense what Chris Farley was to modern dance. It's sloppy, unsightly and unintentionally funny. At this rate, we are a .500 team at best due to poor construction and lazy drafting. Hopefully, we can stich together some competency in the coming series.
