The Rockies kept tinkering this week, trading for Jack Flaherty and hoping he would give us solid innings! Hosting the Brewers, Jack and his pitching comrades were more than solid. Let's check it out.
GAME 1
Brewers - 3
Rockies - 4 f11
"Fun" fact - the Brewers only scored in 3 innings during the entire series. But one of those innings was the 6th inning of this one, where a dominant performance by Tyler Glasnow was turned on its head when, with 2 outs, the Brew Crew notched 3 straight hits, capped by a 3-run Drake Baldwin bomb. Ouch. The Rockies would not be able to respond at all until the 9th. With one out and Anthony Bender pitching, Brett Baty steps in (0 for 3 to this point). We get the "1-6" roll....gone! Baty ties it and sends it to extra innings. The Rockies' pen record two perfect frames, and then Ildemaro Vargas walks it off with an RBI single. Adames slide steps across the plate!
Starters - Littell and Glasnow
WP - Civale LP - Johnson HR - Baldiwn, Baty
GAME 2
Brewers - 0
Rockies - 4
Much less drama in game 2. The Rockies get one in the first on a run-scoring double play, and then Jung Hoo Lee uses his N power versus lefties to hit a 2-run homer off of Rodon in the 2nd. And, despite 8 hits and 4 walks, the Brewers never drive a run across. Martin Perez, Jose Butto, and Aaron Civale keep it classy.
Starters - Rodon and Perez
WP - Perez LP - Rodon HR - Lee
GAME 3
Brewers - 2
Rockies - 5
Matt Olson put the Rockies up 1-0 early with an RBI double, but again the Brewers would get a lead when they used 4 hits and a walk in the 5th to go up 2-1 and end Clayton Kershaw's night. That would hold up until the home 8th, when 2 one-out hits, a costly Nacho Alvarez error, and a big triple by Spencer Horwitz would inflict a lot of pain. Horwitz would score on a Will Smith sac fly, and Butto would come on for a 1-2-3 save.
Starters - Boyd and Kershaw
WP - Thielbar LP - Johnson HR - none
GAME 4
Brewers - 2
Rockies -3
Jack Flaherty donned the purple pinstripes and looked bulletproof for 6.2 innings. But as he tried to go 7, he let up a 2-out walk to Isaac Paredes and a deflating homer to Wilmer Flores, and left with a 2-2 game he could not factor in. But the Rocks came right back. Jameson Taillon was also going strong through 6.2, but would falter, letting up 2 outs hits to Tatis and Taylor, allowing Thomas Saggese to score. The Rocks didn't mess around, throwing Mejia and Pagan to control the 8th and 9th innings. As Paredes watched Pagan's 2-2 slider drop into the corner of the zone, he was gone and the sweep was set.
Starters - Taillon and Flaherty
WP -Mejia LP - Taillon SV - Pagan HR - Flores
Thanks to Jordan for rolling. No game was a blowout, and those are the toughest series to come up empty in. Rockies are on a roll but stare down the Dodgers next week. Brewers will next take on the Reds.
