The Nationals traveled to San Diego for a series that included two routs and two close ones. Let's see how it all shook out ...
Game 1: Nationals, 10-2
W - Megill
L - Severino
HR - Profar, Bride, JD Martinez
Jurickson Profar homered in the first for an early lead, then Jonah Bride delivered a blow with a second-inning grand slam off Luis Severino, who struggled with command, let's just say, including walking four straight before the slam. He walked 7 and hit one batter on the night. Michael Busch went 3-5 for the Nats. On the hill, Tylor Megill went seven scoreless, yielding just three hits. LaMonte Wade was injured and would miss the rest of the series.
Game 2: Padres, 4-3
W - Lopez
L - Sanchez
SV - D.Williams
HR - Profar, Rojas
The Friars struck back to even the series, powered by Pablo Lopez's seven strong innings, limiting the Nats to three hits. At the plate, they touched up Cristopher Sanchez for 4 runs in 5+ innings, including a Luke Maile RBI triple (!) Devin Williams entered in the 9th to lock down the save in his first appearance of the season despite yielding a homer to Miguel Rojas. Profar homered for the second straight game.
Game 3: Nationals, 10-3
W - Cease
L - Fried
HR - Profar, Robles, Machado, Conine
Another early barrage from the Nats' bats, this time vs. Max Fried, who walked three in the first inning before Profar hit a grand slam for a 5-0 lead. Fried walked 6 in 4 innings. After back-to-back shots by Manny Machado and Griffin Conine tightened it up in the fourth, Victor Robles delivered a three-run shot to build the lead back to 8-2. This was Profar's third straight game with a homer. Busch went 4 for 5. Dylan Cease pitched 6 OK innings for the W.
Game 4: Nationals, 4-2
W - Junis
L - Mikolas
SV - Yates
HR - Canha, Grichuk
Mark Canha led off the first with a homer for the Padres; the Nats tied it at 1 in the fourth only to see Randal Grichuk's solo shot put the Padres back ahead. MIles Mikolas mostly scattered hits and avoided trouble, but the Nats scratched out a run on an RBI groundout to tie it at 2 in the sixth, then took the lead in the 7th on a wacky "single plus error" play -- BY THE CATCHER. They added another run for a 4-2 lead, then the pen took over, with Jake Junis, Jose Ferrer, Carlos Estevez, and finally Kirby Yates quieting the Padres for the last 5 innings.
For the series, Busch went 12 for 16; Profar was 7 for 15 including his three homers. Thanks to Andy for a fun series.
