Phillies Hang On To Split Series With Dbacks

Second half action begins, but the Phillies are still logging games in the first half. In an effort to catch up, the proxy rule was in play, with the Rockies manager Ed Cirluso asked to play as the Phillies against the Dbacks.

GAME 1

Dbacks - 2

Phillies - 0  (10)

This game would be tied at zero after 9 innings.  Ranger Suarez pitched 8 shutout frames, and Andrew Abbott and 3 relievers matched him.  In the 10th, with Kyle Leahy in his 2nd inning of work, Francisco Lindor paid his old team back with a 2-run homer!  Bednar goes 1-2-3 in the bottom and it's over.

GAME 2

Dbacks - 11

Phillies - 5

Two-thirds of all runs scored in this series were scored in this game.  And it wasn't close.  Dbacks crushed Eduardo Rodriguez and were up 9-0 after 4.  Luis Arraez went 4 for 5, with TWO homers.

GAME 3

Dbacks - 0

Phillies - 1  (14)

This game would be tied at zero after 9 innings (yep, again).  And it would stay stagnant until the 14th.  The Phillies were down to the final bullpen arm (Jose Ferrer).  But he retired 5 straight Dbacks in the 13th and 14th, and then a JJ Bleday pinch-hit double set the Phillies up with men on 2nd and 3rd and no outs.  Stott comes up and grounds directly into a fielder's choice at home.  But with one out, and the outfield in, Elias Diaz hits a flyball B...it lands past the outfielders...RBI single!

GAME 4

Dbacks - 2

Phillies - 3

The Phillies actually had not led at ll in this series except at the very end of game 3.  But we put up a 3-spot in inning 3 featuring a 2-run homer by Brandon Marsh, and Alcantara and 2 relievers made it stand.

JORGE MATEO WATCH - Used as a pinch runner twice - one steal of 2nd base.  Got a rare AB in game 3.

Phillies are 16-20, with Dodgers and Nationals still to go to reach the break.  The Dbacks reach the break at 22-22.
